“Polly, you guys can go back to room three. Dr. Jim will be with you in a few minutes.”

The receptionist smiled at us encouragingly. I took that as a good sign. We’d been waiting a couple of hours for word of Little Bit. I’d spent that time alternating between visualizing the cat as well and happy, and rethinking the events at Welcome Home.

Doctor Jim looked serious as he entered. “Well, ladies, I have to say this is a first for me.”

“Is he OK?” Jenn blurted out.

The doctor’s expression relaxed. “He came through with flying colors. I’m going to keep him overnight to be on the safe side but you should be able to take him home in the morning.”

“Then what do you mean by it’s a first?” I asked.

From behind his back the doctor revealed a soggy, stringy thing. With finger and thumb from both hands he shook it out and held up a teeny, weeny lace thong.

“I’m not sure which one of you two this belongs to, but you might want to be a bit more careful where you leave such things.” By now he was grinning broadly.

“It’s not mine,” Jenn said.

“And it’s certainly not mine,” I added.

“Well it surely can’t belong to…” Dr. Jim began, looking aghast.

We all three gazed at the tiny undergarment, and a vision of the fifty-something Ardith Teasdale wearing it flashed into my mind; all five foot nothing and 300 pounds of her. It wasn’t pretty.
